‘What modules am I likely to study?’ ‘What student support is available here?’ ‘What’s it like living in the local area?’ Are all great questions to ask the staff at a university Open Day. Below is a list of our top 5 tips to help you make the most of a university open day.
Registering before the event can give you a head start in planning out your day. Universities will usually send out information prior to the event via email or post. Here at Newman, after signing up to our Open Day we will send event information regarding talks and tours. Having all this information in advance will help you map out what you want to do and allow you time to think and prepare any questions you may have.
2. Student Ambassadors
They will probably be some of the first people you talk to at an Open Day and arguably some of the most useful. They are current students at the institution and are able to give you their honest opinion and view of studying and possibly living at the university. Ask them anything from how they found the transition to university and how they find balancing study and work to what support is available. They are best placed to answer those questions you may not want to directly ask staff and academics!
3. Get yourself on the tours
On the day, universities will put on tours around their accommodation and campus. It’s important for you to go on these as there is nothing quite like seeing things first hand, particularly if you are thinking of living at the university during term time. These are often delivered by student ambassadors so are the perfect time to get in those niggling questions.
4. Attend academic sessions
Academics and faculties may put on talks/workshops or hold drop-in sessions during an Open Day. These are crucial and offer an invaluable insight into a course/subject you may be looking into. They will be able to offer you guidance on modules they offer and how their assessments work. Here at Newman we also run a series of ‘Learning Days’ relating to particular subjects, more information and how to book can be found below.
5. Get free advice
Typically, during an Open Day, universities may also put on sessions relating to the UCAS application process and student finance. Going to these talks and sessions will give you a head start to beginning your application and gain some handy tips. The careers team and student support may also be on hand if you have any specific questions regarding things such as work placements and disability support.
