Open days can be a daunting prospect for any potential student wanting to make the transition to higher education. ‘Will I like it here?’ ‘Will I make friends?’ ‘Is university for me?’ These are all questions you might find yourself asking when choosing your prospective universities.
The introduction of social distancing has made arranging visits to universities very difficult, with large gatherings prohibited and many university staff working remotely while lockdown is in effect. While this makes Open Days harder to deliver, they are by no means cancelled.
Many universities, Newman included, are changing their approach, using technology to deliver a virtual experience that you as a potential student can enjoy from your home.
This blog aims to give some insight into what you might experience during a Virtual Open Day and how to make the most out of this online visit to your chosen institution.
So, what can you expect from your University?
There will be virtual tours running during the event, this will allow you to explore the campus and get a feel for the environment you will eventually be studying in. It’s also a great opportunity to identify areas you may want to explore physically later in the year at a face-to-face Open Day.
Just like a face-to-face Open Day, there will still be presentations from important student support services as well as advice on the application process. You can expect to see webinars, an interactive way of participating in these live presentations from home.
As with a traditional Open Day, there will always be the opportunity to ask questions, with current students, support services and subject leaders all participating in the Virtual Open Days.
And if you’re still unsure…
Revisit the videos and notes you made on the day. It’s easy with the amount of emails sent to potential students to forget what you experienced at your Virtual Open Day, revisiting the videos and helpful presentations will refresh your memory and encourage follow-up conversations with anyone you met. The university will answer any questions you may have following the event.
Attend a webinar to find out more about one of those essential topics relating to the university admissions process, take a look at the university social media channels for an idea of when these may be.
Come and see us again! Universities are more than happy to offer bespoke appointments to prospective students, either virtually or face-to-face should campuses reopen.
