When is Welcome Week?

You will find your Welcome Week timetable on your course page – please keep checking your timetable as there may be small amendments before Welcome Week begins.

Welcome Week runs from Saturday 14th – Friday 20th September, with the majority of the activities for new undergraduate students taking place between the Monday and Friday. Saturday of Welcome Week is for Postgraduate students.

What happens in Welcome Week?

All students who are new to the university are brought together to access a range of sessions. You will spend time together and with our Welcome Mentors (experienced students who share their knowledge and wisdom) to find your way around the University, getting to know other students on your course.

You will access sessions on the following areas:

  • Studying
  • Staying Safe
  • Student Support Services
  • Newman Students’ Union
  • Employability
  • IT
  • eLearning
  • Library
  • Visit the Welcome Week Hub in St Hilda Atrium

You will also get to spend time getting to know your lecturers within your subject area department and each subject area will have different activities planned for you.

There will also be a Freshers’ Fair on the Wednesday of Welcome Week for you to visit, more details can be found below.

Why is Welcome Week important?

Although the majority of students will enrol online, welcome week is a great way to get used to your surroundings and make a great start to a successful university experience.

Research shows that feeling you belong to your university is key to succeeding in your studies, as is developing your social networks and your academic identity. Everything we do during welcome week is aimed at supporting the development of these things.

Visit the Welcome Week Hub

The Welcome Week Hub will be based in the St Hilda Atrium throughout Welcome Week. There’s a number of things taking place in the Welcome Week Hub including:

  • a social space for new and existing students and staff to relax and enjoy some refreshments whilst meeting new people
  • a help desk to help ran by staff and student to signpost you to the range of services across the University
  • Get your student ID card activated whilst meeting members of IT, Finance and Student Welfare
  • Meet our Welcome Mentors and find the answers to your questions
  • Speak with our Chaplain and take part in a number of activities throughout the week
  • Chill out in the quiet area

Where can I find my Welcome Week timetable?

You will see your Welcome Week timetable on the Course Information and Timetable section. The timetable will allow you to see the main days you are due to be on campus in Welcome Week; they may not match your ongoing timetable, but we would encourage you to make every effort to make the most of the activities in Welcome Week.

HEADstart is delivered in the two weeks before Welcome Week and is designed to help you adapt to university life. Read more about HEADstart.

Freshers' Fair

Freshers’ Fair is your big opportunity to settle in at Newman. You can meet new students by joining a Sports team or Society, have informal conversations with University departments about any concerns or questions you may have or find out more information about some of the local businesses in the area. There’s always plenty of freebies given out including coffee and pizza!
Freshers’ Fair will be held in the Sports Centre on Wednesday 18th September from 10:00-15:00.

There will also be events running during the week, for more information of the events and how to purchase tickets, visit the Students’ Union Facebook page.
